Kyotango sauna trip model course
Travel for the sauna. About two and a half hours from the Kansai region, Kyotango, at the northern tip of Kyoto Prefecture, is where the food of the Sea of Japan meets bathing culture. Here is a two-day, one-night model course built around Nuka to Yuge, winner of SAUNACHELIN 2023.
The star of the course — the first “enzyme bath × private sauna” in Japan
Nuka to Yuge is the first fermentation steam house in Japan, built by a doctor. Warm up to the core in an enzyme bath of 100% Kyotango rice bran, then move on to one of five private Finnish-style saunas. This combination exists nowhere else in the world.
For the highlight of the trip, choose the Nuka to Yuge Set Plan (Long about 3 hours 30 minutes, ¥20,000 / Short about 2 hours 30 minutes, ¥18,000).
Day 1 — tour the Kyoto by the sea, get steamed, and finish with great food
Morning: Amanohashidate
Amanohashidate, one of the Three Views of Japan, is about 30 minutes by car from Nuka to Yuge. Stroll Kasamatsu Park, famous for viewing the sandbar upside-down between your legs, and Chionji Temple.
Afternoon: Nuka to Yuge Set Plan (about 3 hours 30 minutes)
Counseling → rice-bran enzyme bath → private sauna. A sauna entered after raising your core temperature with fermentation heat, followed by a cold bath of natural groundwater, for a reset unlike any before. Rentals are free and you can come empty-handed.
Evening: the food of Tango terroir
Kyotango was selected for the Gastronomy City Award 2024. Restaurants serving the seafood of the Sea of Japan, starting with Taiza crab in winter, are nearby. See also our recommended sauna meals.
Stay
At KISSUIEN Stay & Food next door, you can stay on just as you are after your bath. For a seaside inn, head to Yuhigaura Onsen (about 30 minutes by car). See places to stay nearby.
Day 2 — the funaya of Ine and the coastline of Tateiwa
Morning: the funaya of Ine
Visit the rows of boathouses that seem to float on the sea (about 60 minutes by car). Take it easy on a sightseeing boat or at a seaside café.
Afternoon: Tateiwa and the Tango coastline
Tour the scenery of the San’in Kaigan Geopark, such as Tateiwa, a giant columnar-jointed rock about 20 m high (about 25 minutes by car), and head home.
Access
- By car: About 15 minutes from Kyotango-Omiya IC on the San’in Kinki Expressway. Free parking for 50 cars.
